- Mortar bombs fly in a high-arcing trajectory, soaring over friendly troops and intervening terrain, to drop down onto the target from above. Unlike most other infantry weapons, they cannot conduct direct fire
- Once in position they were able to be called down as the enemy positions were located to deliver supporting fire for attacks, and for breaking up Japanese Banzai charges
